How to study for CeMAP without losing evenings to the handbook
A practical way to cover FRE1, FRE2, MRT1, MRT2, and ASEW/ASSC: a weekly plan, exam-style practice, and what to skip until revision.

Treat CeMAP as five unit exams across three modules: cover the syllabus in order, practise in exam language, and keep a short list of weak topics.
- FRE1 and FRE2 (FSRE) are regulation, ethics, and key parties — definitions matter more than mortgage products.
- MRT1 and MRT2 (MORT) are mortgage law, products, application, and post-completion; diagrams help more than prose.
- ASEW/ASSC is applied. Practise six case studies with ten linked multiple-choice questions each, choosing the most suitable answer from the customer facts.
Why treat the five units separately?
CeMAP is one qualification, but the papers do not reward the same kind of memory. FRE1 and FRE2 ask you to know the UK financial-services framework, skills, and ethics. MRT1 and MRT2 ask you to know how mortgages, law, products, and post-completion work. ASEW/ASSC asks you to apply that knowledge to six customer case studies, each with ten linked multiple-choice questions.
If you revise all five as one pile of notes, you will over-prepare products for FRE1 and under-prepare the linked case-study questions for ASEW/ASSC.
What does a simple weekly plan look like?
Most people studying around a job can cover a unit in two to four weeks if they sit down three or four times a week. The exact number of hours matters less than finishing a topic and then answering questions on it the same week.
- Week structure: two study sessions for new material, one for questions
- Keep a running list of topics you got wrong
- Do not start a new unit until you can explain the last one out loud
- Leave the final week of each unit for mixed papers
Why practise in exam language?
Reading a handbook until it feels familiar is not the same as recognising the wording the exam uses. Example papers exist for that gap. They are study materials, not official LIBF papers, but they train timing and trap phrases.
After each paper, map every miss back to a syllabus heading. That list becomes your revision, not the whole book.

It depends on your starting point. Career-changers often need a few months. People already in a brokerage can move faster on MRT1, MRT2, and ASEW/ASSC. Do not copy someone else’s timetable.
